CHAINLINE BREWING MOVES TAPROOM TO KIRKLAND URBAN

We are continuing our mission of supporting small businesses during the pandemic by producing our show. This is a zero-budget show featuring local businesses to visit for food, drink, travel, and adventure! In this blog / episode we are going to introduce you to Scott Holm, Founder of Chainline Brewing Company. We discuss operating a business during the pandemic and take you on a short tour of their brewery as well as their new taproom at at Kirkland Urban. Chainline Brewing did a hard pivot during the pandemic and started canning many of their beers. We also got the see their new canning line in action! Join us in our mission of supporting our small local businesses! If you haven’t been to their new Taproom at Kirkland Urban you’re gonna want to check it out. They’ve got awesome selection of beer on tap and they’ve also got growlers and cans to go. They’ve got both indoor & outdoor seating. Thanks to Scott Holm and his team for having us!

what can you tell us about your new location?

Scott Holm – So this is our new tap room in Kirkland Urban, right in the heart of Kirkland. It’s version 2.0. Our original tap room was just up the street and it was a little bit smaller and the brewery was attached to it. At the time we just kind of outgrew the space, so we needed more space to make more beer. And then the opportunity came up to move the taproom to this location, and we couldn’t be happier here.

Tim Wuolle – Can you tell us about the food menu?

Scott Holm – Yeah one of the great things about this new location is that we actually offer our own food! Historically we would have food trucks or something like that. So what we do here is pizzas. Small square pizzas, personal size & several different varieties. And then some handmade pretzels from Kringles Bakery over in Redmond, WA that we get fresh several times per week. Really good, really delicious, and really quick.

Tim Wuolle -Excellent! OK. Why don’t we head over to the brewery and check out the canning line?

Scott Holm – Yeah i’d love to show that to you. It’s really fun to watch in operation.

How did you get started in brewing beer?

Scott Holm – This is where it all started. We were brewing in my garage for about two years before we ever opened in order to get everything right. Every weekend making beer. About 15 gallons at a time. Now we make 40 barrels (or 1500 gallons) at a time. Quite a different scale than where we first started out.

“Before covid hit, we were selling our beer mainly on draft to bars and restaurants all throughout the state, really. And then overnight all of those places shut down including our own tap room, so we had to really come up with a solution quickly…”

Tim Wuolle – How has it been opening a new business during the pandemic?

Scott Holm – It’s been challenging. So before covid hit we were selling our beer mainly in draft to bars and restaurants all throughout the state really, and then overnight all of those places shut down including our own tap room. So we had to really come up with a solution quickly, and so we pivoted hard into canning. We overnight turned off all of our draft beer and almost everything, probably 90 plus percent of the beer that we make, now goes out of the door mainly in can package. We chose cans because anymore it’s a much better package. It’s a light-proof, light-stable package.

Tim Wuolle – I like the cans because you can travel with them. You can take them outdoors!

Where can we find youR BEER?

Scott Holm – Our cans are available not only at our Taproom, but also all throughout western Washington. You can find them at grocery stores, convenience stores and craft bottle shops around Seattle. You can also find our product in several locations in Spokane, WA. We distribute both here in Washington and around the world in Japan and the Philippines.

Tim Wuolle – Do you have any of your cans at any stadiums?

Scott Holm – So right now are some of our 16-ounce products are offered at the Tacoma Dome down in Tacoma, and then I believe we’re going to be start serving at The Rainier’s, the minor league baseball team, starting this summer once the games get going in person.

Tim Wuolle – Awesome! It’s always good to have a good craft beer option at a game!

Scott Holm – Yeah it’s one of the great things around here, is that if you go to a sporting event, you can actually get good beer!

Tim Wuolle – Can you tell us about your barrel aged beers?

Scott Holm – So in addition to our flagship beers and our limited 16 ounce one-off beers that we make, we’ve got a relatively modest barrel aged beer program. Clean beers like your barrel-aged stouts and things like that, but also what we like to call Brett beers and sour beers that are wood-aged as well, so interesting flavors there. Not only bourbon, but sherry, port barrels, we have some tequila, and we have a mezcal barrel. So we’re really trying to experiment with some of those flavors and see what we can come up with.
